Validity refers to how well the instrument is actually able to measure an area of interest (Validity, 2020). Reliability refers to the consistency of the data collection (Reliability, 2020). These two aspects of data collection are very important for a study to be one that will be taken seriously. If an instrument being used is constantly giving different information or isn’t actually able to gather information at all, it will be useless in research.
There are several different strategies used to increase the integrity of a qualitative study. Long, consistent involvement ensures that there is sufficient time spent in order to gather the appropriate amount of data. Reflexivity allows a researcher to journal and pay close attention to where their own biases or opinions may be affecting the trajectory of the study. Recording detailed information is important to be able to show all the aspects of the study and how they were performed. This includes how data was obtained, how interviews were performed, and what participants said (“Discrete”, 2020).
My study will be mainly qualitative. Because of this I will put a large emphasis on making sure that everything collected is recorded in very great detail to maintain integrity. I will also make sure to stick to the plan of interviews and continually check myself in regard to how my feelings may be influencing the questions I’m asking. I may also use scaled questionnaires. When recording this information it will be important to pay very close attention to each question and answer in order to ensure reliability and validity.

Reliability and validity are important to any quality research. Reliability is defined as a tool’s ability to take the same measurements each time. For example, a glucometer should measure blood sugar levels after consuming meals. If the meter cannot produce a reading then it is not reliable. Tools need provide consistent measurements on two occasions in order for them to be reliable. Validity is a tool’s ability to measure what we want to study (Watson, 2015, p. 46). If a glucometer measures blood sugar level of 70 before a meal and blood sugar level of 120 after a meal then the machine is valid. However, if the machine measures blood sugar level of 70 before and after a meal then the machine is not valid. Tools need to produce valid data in order to be reliable. I would have utilized a structured questionnaire to study the physical exhaustion that contributes to diabetes burnout in type 1 diabetics. This questionnaire with consists of responses that are rated on a number scale. For example, the questions could be answered with either strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree and rated 1 through 5 respectively. This will be a tool that can be used repeatedly for other studies and can measure the same thing on more than two occasions.
Researchers must comply with ethical principles and professional standards to ensure the integrity of their research (Karenman, n.d., p. 2). it is vital for researchers to be honest and reporting and conducting their research, share all resources utilized, conduct unbiased peer reviews, and ensure the protection of participants. I would create a contract of trust for my participants to sign which which state the purpose of the study; any expectations I have for the participants; and the duties and responsibilities of the researchers. I I would be forthcoming about any profits to be made from the research. I would also documents all personal observations to be reviewed and audited wow the research is conducted.
