Short version: Create a proposal for tidal power using the Deem Zoom website as the basis for your decision.

Long version:

For this assignment, you are going to use the website Deep Zoom Nautical Charts. http://www.deepzoom.com/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Basic overview of Deep Zoom website

Example of floating tidal turbines.

Deepzoom shows you tides and tidal currents of the United States. For this assignment, propose 3 separate locations to site a series of tidal turbines to provide power to Seattle. Where you site the turbines should be based on the location of strong currents. (Hint, most likely these will be in the Puget Sound, but could also be in the San Juan Islands or the Strait of Juan de Fuca) You should also take into account other factors such as impact on navigable waters (blocking or near shipping lanes is bad), proximity to users (closer to cities which reduces need for power transmission is good), and other impacts. The perfect location would have the strongest currents right next to Seattle, which would minimize need for power lines and would need to be out of the shipping lanes. (Hint, the perfect location doesn’t exist.)

Submit a pdf of your proposal. The proposal should include

  • Part 1: a map of the Puget Sound with 3 discrete locations marked. You can use any reasonable map or even a screenshot from Google Earth. Format is up to you but I must be able to tell not only the specific location for each and an overall, “Here are the 3 locations on one map” image. In simple terms, this can be a zoomed in imaged from deepzoom for each location and then an overall map.
  • Part 2: justification for each location and a ranking of the three sites
    • include with your explanation to help justify your decision, screen shots of the deepzoom site showing the strong currents your site should experience. These images can be combined with the above images.

Note, for the image above, which is located near Petersburg, Alaska, they have strong currents right next to the town, but the dotted lines actually show marine traffic. I’d suggest that you screenshot the strongest current this site has, e.g. arguing the best current without current is hard.

  • potential logistical issues and challenges
  • why a tidal turbine is the best option compared to other tidal energy strategies. This piece will require outside research as we didn’t get into this in our lessons.

Proposals should typically be 2-3 pages in length although images may increase total length to a maximum of 4 pages. You will need to bring in outside sources to answer some of the questions.

Bonus: Up to 5 points can be earned for making this assignment look like an official proposal from your company. Your customer is the City of Seattle. You are a tidal power company, e.g. make something up.
